COVID - 19 The impact on tennis camps and clinics

We at Jonathan Markson Tennis have been closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation. We were one of a few international tennis companies that operated tennis camps over the 2020 Summer, delivering courses to over 250 players in the UK. It was extremely hard work but through this experience we have developed tried and tested operational procedures to keep players and our staff safe and participating in a sport we all love. Through the summer we have been continually re-evaluating our services to ensure they are more flexible than ever to meet your needs. So that when you book with Jonathan Markson Tennis, you book with confidence. 

We want to assure you that in delivering our tennis courses we are fully compliant with Government guidelines and law specific to Covid-19 safety.

Throughout the planning of our camps our team works closely with all the necessary stakeholders and suppliers to ensure that our events are safe and well run (e.g. the accommodation providers, local sports centres, Health & Safety advisors etc).

This is true at any time, for any camp, in any year.

However, the Covid-19 pandemic has of course provided additional challenges and thinking needed. Our priority at all times is, and continues to be, the health & safety of all of the players, coaches, staff, and partners.

We will continue to follow the advice and guidance given by the UK Government and throughout the planning for our camps we will continue to take relevant advice from reliable sources. We will take all the appropriate steps between now and at the start of camp to continue to help to ensure the health and safety of all those involved.

Writing this as we launch our 2021 programme, we do not know what, if any, restrictions will need to be in place when each camp takes place. However, as a rule throughout all our planning we always prepare for the unexpected.

As such we are considering various measures which could be put in place to help players and the JMT teams to social distance as far as possible whilst at the camp.

These measures might include for example reducing group sizes, staggering tennis and meal times/location to allow for increased space and changing our activity schedule.

Other measures such as increased hand sanitation facilities, and additional guidelines for players may also be in place.

The situation & thus the measures are likely to be changeable as we proceed over the coming months, and so full details of all measures may not be communicated until approximately 2/3 weeks prior to each camp. However, rest assured that we are working hard behind the scenes with all the relevant experts and stakeholders to ensure we can all be as safe as possible.

What is your cancellation policy? 

Any UK summer camp bookings made from the 7th October 2020 for 2021 may be deferred to 2022 or cancelled and fully refunded up until 1st April 2021. No questions asked. Read full details

What happens if I am unabe to travel to a UK Camp due to travel restrictions or enforced quarantine? 

If you are unsuccessful in claiming back from your appropriate insurance, then we are offering a credit (to be used in 2022) of your balance** which you can claim up to 48hrs before the day of the start of your course. Read full details 

What happens if you are unable to run your UK Camps in 2021? 

If we are unable to run our UK Camps in 2021, for whatever reason, we will give you the opportunity to move your booking to 2022. 

What happens if I or someone in my bubble gets COVID-19 symptons whilst attending a UK residential camp with Jonathan Markson Tennis? 

In all cases, players will be required to follow local Government guidelines. We are working with all our accommodation and meal suppliers to ensure that we can provide a safe and comfortable environement for any player (s) requiring quarantine. For example, medical support (including access to COVID-19 tests should they be required), meal delivery and staff supervision are all part of our comprehensive plan. Please note - A condition of booking is that all players attending our courses have insurance to cover any extra costs incurred by Jonthan Markson Tennis in this event. As stated above, a full up to date procedural plan will be issued to all players signed up to our camps 2/3 weeks before arrival. 

What is the difference between a tennis camp and a tennis holiday?

Our tennis camps are intensive weeks with 5 hours of coaching per day. Tennis Camps tend to take place in the UK. Our tennis holidays are in some of our favourite tennis locations around the world. Typically you receive 3 hours tennis coaching in the morning with your afternoons free to explore or simply lounge by the pool!

What are the qualification of the coaches on your tennis holidays and UK camps?

All our coaches are qualified tennis coaches. The coaches at all centres are selected not just for their knowledge of tennis but for their personal qualities, especially enthusiasm, patience, sense of humour and attentiveness to individual needs.

Do you run holidays specifically for single tennis players?

Yes. We run weeks at our centre in the Algarve. Check out the Single Tennis Player week web pagesfor more details.

Do I need to pay the full amount at the time of the booking?

We ask for a deposit of £350 per person per week of tennis holiday/camp. The remaining balance will then be due 8 weeks prior to your arrival. Should you book with less than 8 weeks to your arrival, we will require a full payment. For the residential summer tennis camps, the balance will be due on the 13 May for all weeks of camp. 

What happens if it rains?

Should there be some rain during your tennis session time, the coach will do his best to work around the timing to complete the programme.  It is quite common for the video feedback sessions to take place during rain delays so making best use of the time.

UK Camp Specific Questions

When is the last date I can book on the summer camps?

We do not have an “end date” for the enrolment, but we do have limited places at our camps, so once they have all been filled, we will stop taking bookings. If you know you are going to attend the camp we recommend booking as soon as possible.

Will I have to share a room? If so, what is their nationality and will they have a similar age?

In Oxford and Yorkshire (Giggleswick) we have single or double occupancy rooms with shared bathrooms.

We always try to accommodate players with friends of a similar age. We usually try to mix nationalities to encourage conversation in English. We only accommodate them with people of same nationality if requested by the parents, or if we have no other option, due to the age versus gender versus nationality.

In Brighton and Cambridge we have single en-suite rooms.

Do you have the option of staying with a local family available?

Unfortunately we do not have this option at our UK Camps. We have English as the common language throughout the camp, in order to incentive the participants to improve their English skills.

Students (15-21 yr olds) attending our Tennis & French Camp in Annecy stay with local families. 

My mother tongue is not English, do you have coaches that speak other languages in case my child needs any assistance?

Our coaches come not only from the UK but also different countries in Europe, such as France, Spain, Italy, Germany. Even though our common language at the camp is English, we believe that the kids will feel more comfortable knowing that in case they need any assistance or are home sick, can have someone that they can count on.

What proportion of non-British players are on the camp?

The camp is truly international, with an excellent mix of nationalities. Over 50% of players are from different countries. The common theme is to play language at the camp. We have a good mix of English, French speakers, Italia, German and Spanish speakers. 

What should I bring with me to camp?

We will send you a kit list in your welcome pack following completion of your payment plan. 

Tennis Holiday Specific Questions

Are there a minimum number of players for the tennis programme to take place?

In most of our resorts do not have a minimum number of players for our guests to enjoy our tennis programme. The 15-hour programme is conditional to a minimum of 3 participants. Should there be 1 or 2 participants; the programme will be altered to 7.5 hours or 10 hours respectively. There will be no change on the price due to the increased intensity of the lower coach/pupil ratio.
The only exception is at our Algarve centre, where there will always be a total of 15 hours of tennis coaching.

Is there a specific day of the week to start my tennis holiday?

Since our tennis programme is from Monday to Friday only, we usually suggest our clients to arrive at the venue on a Saturday or Sunday. You will then be able to enjoy a whole week of tennis. But we do understand that some of the venues don’t have daily flights, so we will do our best to accommodate the holiday to your flight options. 

Do I need to stay for 6 nights, or are the number of nights flexible?

Our packages can be adjusted to your needs. So, should you wish to stay more or less than 6 nights we can separately work on an appropriate rate. Tennis is normally organised Monday to Friday.
